匈牙利钢琴手 Rezso Seress 与其女友的爱情破裂之后，在1933年写下 一首充满哀愁的歌曲，名为《忧郁的星期天》(Szomorú vasárnap）。此歌的英文译名是 《Gloomy Sunday》。起初，作者试图出版这首歌曲时遇到了些许麻烦。一位出版商曾说：“（拒绝出版）并非因为它是一个忧伤的调子，而是因为该曲之中流露出的那种魄人心魂的绝望情绪，我以为这对任何听者均无益处。” (It is not that the song is sad, there is a sort of terrible compelling despair about it. I don\’t think it would do anyone any good to hear a song like that.) 不过几经周折后《忧郁的星期天》终于在布达佩斯得到了发行，并在两三年内变成最为畅销的歌曲。没人料到的是， 这首歌曲流入世间之后引发了许许多多悲惨离奇的事故（当地的报纸曾对有关事件作过大量的报道），就象古老的神话所描述的那样：潘多拉盒子一经打开，无数妖魔和灾难便被释放到人间。然而，潘多拉盒子中最后一个出来的是“希望”，正是它让这个不甚完美的世界得以延续；而《忧郁的星期天》给人们带来的则是一片绝望之声。
听后造成100多人自杀的 MP3 《黑色的星期天》(gloomy sunday)当时被人们称为“魔鬼的邀请书”,至少有100人因听了它而自杀，因而曾被查禁长达13年之久。关于作曲家本人创作曲子的动机，连精神分析家和心理学家也无法作出圆满的解释 . 背景音乐是英文版的，沙拉布莱曼的翻唱。
